Dynamic disk is a widely-used disk type in Server field. Different from basic disk, volumes created in dynamic disks are not basic partitions but dynamic volumes. There are big differences between dynamic disk and basic disk. To manage dynamic disk efficiently, every Server user who uses dynamic disk should master characteristics of dynamic disk and method for creating various kinds of dynamic volumes

5 types of dynamic disks
Basic partition just includes primary partition and logical partition while there are 5 types of dynamic volumes including simple volume, spanned volume, striped volume, mirrored volume, and RAID-5 volume. Different dynamic volumes have different characteristics.

Simple volume
Simple volume is the simplest dynamic volume, and there is no big difference between basic partition and simple volume. However, we can create any number of simple volumes as long as the disk space allows. Besides, dynamic disk can break through disk space restriction, namely using other disk space to extend desired simple volume.

Spanned volume
Among dynamic volumes, spanned volume can use the free space on at most 32 disks to create a volume, which makes full use of resource on disks. Unfortunately, it can not enhance performance and does not have fault tolerance function.

Striped volume
Striped volume is a dynamic volume which can promote data access rate. When we write in data, data are partitioned to data blocks of 64 KB, and then different data blocks are simultaneously written to those disks which constitute striped volume. However, this kind of dynamic volume does not have fault tolerance function, either.

Mirrored volume
Those users who are familiar with RAID disk know RAID 1 has extremely high safety, because it can make a mirrored backup for stored data. Mirrored volume is a dynamic volume just like RAID 1. When we store data, mirrored volume will generate another identical transcript and store it on another disk. Therefore, mirrored volume needs 2 disks.

RAID-5 volume
In order to remedy the defect of not offering fault tolerance, a parity digit is added in RAID-5. RAID-5 is also called the striped volume with fault tolerance function, and it includes at least 3 disks and at most 32 disks. When one disk does not work in the process of operation, information on other disks can operate and recover data on failed disk at the same time. Therefore, RAID-5 has relatively higher use ratio among all dynamic volumes.

The best tool for creating and managing dynamic volume
After learning about the 5 types of dynamic volumes, users can create corresponding dynamic volumes according to their own demands. For this purpose, MiniTool Partition Wizard, the best partition magic, provides users with the best solution to manage dynamic volumes. This dynamic disk manager designed for dynamic volumes not only can help users create various types of dynamic volumes but also can offer multiple dynamic volume management functions, such as resize volumes, format volumes, delete volumes, and wipe volumes.

This is the very interface where we can create dynamic volumes. In this interface, we select any type of dynamic volume, and then click "Next" to enter the corresponding dynamic volume creating interface. We can create dynamic volumes much easily as long as we perform operation according to the prompts.

Note: If you find option of RAID-5 can not be selected, please check whether your computer has at least 3 disks or not, or whether your operating system supports RAID-5 volume, or whether the disk fails.

Creating dynamic volume is just the first step to manage dynamic volumes. As a most widely used disk management way among servers, its management quality directly determines running rate. Therefore, it is especially important to manage dynamic volumes better with dynamic disk manager. If you still do not find a satisfying dynamic disk manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard is your best choice. It provides dynamic disk users with various dynamic volume management solutions.
